WOMEN’S TENNIS

Think Tonya Fuller has seen enough of Sandra Birch? Fuller of the University of San Diego was ousted twice by Stanford’s Birch in the NCAA Individual Tournament at Stanford.

In the third round of singles, top-seeded Birch defeated Fuller, 6-0, 6-1, and in the second round of doubles, fourth-seeded Birch and Debbie Graham defeated Fuller and Julie McKeon, 7-5, 6-1.

Fuller had advanced in singles by edging Stephanie London of USC in a match that began Monday night but was postponed because of rain.

London won the first set 1-6. When play resumed early Tuesday morning, Fuller fought off two match points and came back to win the second set, 7-6, taking the tiebreaker, 7-1. Fuller then won the third set, 6-3.

By making the round of 16 in singles, Fuller became the first USD woman to achieved All-American status.

Fuller-McKeon won an earlier doubles match, 6-1, 6-3, over Cindy Olejar and Mary Reilly of Washington.

San Diego State’s Dorey Brandt and Nicole Storto advanced to today’s third round in doubles, downing Karen Bergan and Jennifer Rojohn of Arizona State, 6-0, 6-1, and Michele McMillen and Debbie Moringiello of Tennessee, 6-0, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1.

BASEBALL

San Diego State earned the No. 2-seeding in the double-elimination Western Athletic Conference tournament with a second-place finish and will open against third-seeded Brigham Young Thursday at Hawaii’s Rainbow Stadium. The Aztecs are 39-18, 15-6 in the WAC. BYU is 34-14, 16-7. Top-seeded Hawaii (46-14, 22-5) will face fourth-seeded Wyoming (31-20, 14-12) in the first round. The tournament winner will get an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.

San Diego Mesa will face Cerritos at 3 p.m. Friday in the Southern California finals of the California Community College tournament. Rancho Santiago and host Riverside are the other two teams in the double-elimination tournament. Mesa is 27-12 and will start Mission Bay alumnus Jim Thomas (10-2) in the opener.

RUNNING

Former Grossmont High standout Darcy Arreola was named female athlete of the year at Cal State Northridge. She was the first Northridge athlete to be named an Division I All-American after she finished 12th in the NCAA cross-country championships last fall. Arreola, a three-time Division II All-American, will compete in the NCAA Track and Field Championships in the 800 meters and 3,000.

VOLLEYBALL

Deitre Collins, a starting middle blocker on the 1988 U.S. Olympic women’s team, returned to the USA team after playing two years in Paris. She practiced for the first time since her return Tuesday.
