Apple May Lay Off Up to 2,000 Workers: Apple Computer spokesman Christopher Escher would neither confirm nor deny a report that it will lay off up to 2,000 people next week, but industry analysts unanimously agreed that some job cuts were likely as the company seeks to improve its sagging profitability. Apple’s earnings have been under pressure as a result of its 7-month-old strategy to boost market share with low-cost models of its flagship Macintosh computer. The San Francisco Chronicle, citing unidentified sources inside Apple, reported Friday that Apple would lay off anywhere between 600 and 2,000 people.
