MOORPARK : College Students to Join Prop. 98 Protest

Students from Moorpark College and groups from 40 other state community colleges plan to spend today telephoning state legislators nonstop to protest a proposal to suspend Proposition 98.

The proposition sets aside about $2 billion to equalize state financial aid going to school districts for education programs.

Gov. Pete Wilson has proposed suspending the funding to balance next year’s state budget.

At Moorpark College, where students initiated the phone drive, about 30 students will work the phones in shifts from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., said David Fee of the student group Coalition for Political Responsibility.

Fee said schools from Los Angeles to Sacramento would join in the phone protest.

“We’re going to keep calling them up and hope it will be busy every time we call,” Fee said.

“The way the legislators work is through their phones. If their phones are tied up, then their offices are shut down.”
