Counseling Prof. Gerald F. Corey has been named Cal State Fullerton’s outstanding professor of 1991, university officials have announced. It is the institution’s top award for faculty.
“Dr. Corey is a shining example to his colleagues and an exceptional role model for our students,” university President Milton A. Gordon said.
A nationally known psychologist and counselor, Corey has written 11 books since 1988, most on theory and techniques in counseling and psychotherapy. He has been a professor of counseling and human services at Cal State Fullerton since 1972.
He is also coordinator of the university’s Human Services Program, a bachelor of science degree program offered at Cal State Fullerton for students interested in careers in counseling, social and mental welfare work as well as public administration.
Faculty colleagues, students and alumni say Corey is especially deserving of recognition for his exceptional teaching and inspirational abilities.
“I have never encountered a teacher with as much enthusiasm, dedication, wisdom and love for (his) profession and students,” said Stuart Bloom, a marriage and family therapist on the faculty at Fullerton. “He has a gift for giving feedback and criticism in such a way that the recipients feel valued and appreciated, while at the same time inspired to improve their teaching methods.”
