World IN BRIEF : SOUTH AFRICA : ANC Urged to Join Peace Conference

Business and church leaders met with President Frederik W. de Klerk in Cape Town in a late bid to overcome an African National Congress boycott of a scheduled weekend peace summit on township violence. De Klerk has vowed to go ahead with the two-day conference with the Inkatha Freedom Party, ANC’s bitter rival in the township wars, as the main participant. The ANC has said it will not attend because it sees the government as a participant, not a mediator.
