Lawyers Fighting Bid to Deport 2 Palestinians
A group of immigration and civil rights attorneys filed papers in U.S. Immigration Court in Los Angeles this week to dismiss new deportation charges against two Palestinians accused of supporting a group with a history of terrorism.
The two Palestinians are part of the so-called L.A. Eight, seven Palestinians and a Kenyan who were arrested by immigration and FBI agents more than four years ago for allegedly backing the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The government has been attempting to deport the eight--six on visa violations and two on charges of backing the PFLP.
Last month, the government filed charges against Khader Hamide of Los Angeles and Michel Shehadeh of Long Beach, both U.S. residents, alleging that they “afforded material support” to the PFLP. Their attorneys charge that the new accusations are politically motivated and unconstitutional.
