Judge OKs Settlement of Suit Against Marcos
A Los Angeles judge this week approved a $2-million wrongful-death settlement against former Philippines First Lady Imelda Marcos on the condition that the money not come from her frozen assets.
A Seattle jury initially awarded $15.1 million to the families of Silme Domingo and Gene Viernes, who were shot to death in 1981. Both men were leaders in the Union of Democratic Filipinos, an anti-Marcos group. Attorneys for Marcos, the families of the dead men and the Philippine government later agreed to reduce the amount to $2 million.
They sought and received approval from U. S. District Judge Mariana Pfaelzer to settle the case on the condition that Marcos gave assurances that the money would not come from nearly $12 million in Marcos property that has been frozen since 1986 pending the outcome of the $54.6-billion racketeering suit the government of the Philippines has filed against her.
