Herb Carleton, a Pulitzer Prize-nominated photographer who worked for the Daily News of Los Angeles for 41 years, has died at his North Hollywood home. He was 64.

Carleton died Thursday of heart failure, said his cousin, Karen Linderborn.

Carleton was born in Los Angeles, played drums in a jazz band and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

In 1948, he began working for the Van Nuys News and Valley Green Sheet--which later became the Daily News--and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his photo of the 1953 fire at the Warner Bros. studio. Carleton also was a team photographer for the Los Angeles Rams from the 1950s through the 1970s and did photography for the Ice Follies. He retired from the Daily News in 1989.
