BOWLING : Match Play Means Business
The lanes quieted considerably, and the camaraderie among the players faded Tuesday in the U.S. Women’s Bowling Open at Fountain Bowl in Fountain Valley.
As the field of 240 was cut to 24, the marathon event changed complexion, from a total-score qualifying format to more serious match play.
There are plenty of big names in the hunt for the $16,000 first prize, with 1990 pro player of the year Leanne Barrette the 40-game leader with 8,934.
Chasing her in order are Cheryl Daniels, Donna Adamek, Wendy Macpherson and Carol Norman.
Defending champion Dana Miller-Mackie is also in contention.
They are bowling 24 matches in the round-robin semifinals to determine the five who will be in Thursday’s championship rolloff.
