Judge Rules for Players Over NFL

A federal judge in Minneapolis cleared the way Tuesday for NFL players to sue for free agency by throwing out the league’s labor antitrust exemption.

The league said it will appeal the ruling.

The ruling, which recognizes the players’ union decertification, is the latest in a series of decisions by U.S. District Judge David Doty. It came in response to a motion by running back Freeman McNeil of the New York Jets and other players who sued, seeking unlimited free agency.

Doty’s ruling held that because the union no longer is handling grievances for the players, it has abandoned its collective bargaining relationship with the league.
