HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL : SOUTHERN SECTION CHAMPIONSHIPS : 5-A DIVISION : Upstart Camarillo Defeats Buena Behind Pitching of Richardson, 3-0
The Camarillo High softball team made another entry its book of first-time accomplishments by beating Buena, 3-0, Saturday night in the Southern Section 5-A Division championship game at Mayfair Park in Lakewood.
The Scorpions (24-5), first-time champions of the Marmonte League this year, won the title in their first appearance in a title game.
Darwin Tolzin, in his first full year as coach at Camarillo, was overwhelmed by the Scorpions’ performance.
“It’s been one of those superb seasons,” he said
Laura Richardson (15-3), a sophomore right-hander, threw a two-hitter and struck out 14
Richardson and an airtight defense allowed just three Buena runners to reach base. Richardson retired the first 11 batters she faced before Jennifer Henry dropped a looping fly ball into shallow left field for a base hit.
Camarillo scored the only run it would need in the fifth inning. Bonnie Billups led off with a single and Lori Vargeson followed with a sacrifice bunt, which was fielded by pitcher Krist Parcel.
Parcel picked up the ball and attempted to get Billups going to second, but the throw went high and wide into right-center field and Billups went all the way home.
