AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Verdugo Hills’ Canale Records 20 Strikeouts
Josh Canale registered 20 strikeouts and allowed three hits to spearhead Verdugo Hills’ 7-1 win over visiting Palmdale on Saturday in an American Legion District 20 baseball game at Glendale High.
Canale (1-0), a junior right-hander who pitched six complete games and was 5-4 for Crescenta Valley High this past season, struck out the side in the third, sixth and eighth innings.
Verdugo Hills (1-1) was leading, 2-1, when Brett Miller broke the game open with a bases-loaded triple in the sixth.
In other District 20 games:
Panorama City 14, Encino-Crespi 12 (11 innings)--Run-scoring singles by Jared Baumblatt and Josh Smith in the bottom of the 11th gave Panorama City the win at Monroe High.
Encino-Crespi trailed, 10-4, after five innings but scored six runs, including two in the bottom of the ninth, to send the game into extra innings.
Panorama City answered with two runs in the top of the 10th, and Encino-Crespi countered with two runs on Kyle Carden’s two-run double in the bottom of the inning.
Adrian Lovrich (1-0) picked up the victory in relief for Panorama City (2-0).
Woodland Hills West 12, West Hills 6--Greg Lederman hit a grand slam and two doubles and drove in six runs for visiting Woodland Hills West at Chaminade High.
Aaron Weiss, Justin Stark and Daniel Cey each added two hits for West (2-1).
Granada Hills West 12, Newhall-Saugus 7--Mike Petruzates hit a solo home run and earned his second victory in as many decisions to lead host Granada Hills West (3-0). Dave Cipolla was three for three and Rob Rundquist had two hits and three RBIs for West, and Scott Schonzeit and Gaby Halcovich each drove in two runs.
Oak Park-Agoura 10, Las Virgenes 5--Jason Warren singled twice and earned the pitching victory for host Oak Park-Agoura (2-1).
Josh Morton hit a three-run home run for Las Virgenes (1-2).
Notre Dame 19, North Hollywood 0--Lou Tapia was three for five and drove in two runs for host Notre Dame (3-1) in a game that was called after seven innings because of the 10-run rule.
Francisco Dongo was three for three and Chris Leveque (2-0) and Edgar Maldonado combined to limit North Hollywood to three hits.
Lancaster 8, Littlerock 2--Lancaster pitchers Rick Nickols and Phillip King combined for 18 strikeouts at Littlerock.
Heath Fine and George Boykins each had three hits for Lancaster (1-1).
Sun Valley 5, Eagle Rock 3--With his team trailing, 3-1, Sun Valley’s Steve Chavez led off the fifth with a solo home run, and Jonathan Campbell scored on Gabe Chavez’s single to tie the score, 3-3.
Sun Valley (1-1) added runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Nick Chavez, Albert Aleman and Brian Esquival each had two hits for Eagle Rock (2-1).
Granada Hills East 8-7, Encino-Tarzana 2-8--Jeff Tagliaferri hit a two-run home run for host Granada Hills East in the first game. Rick Nadeau added three hits and three RBIs for East (2-3), and Cody Beaumaster threw a two-hitter.
Encino-Tarzana scored two runs in the eighth to win the second game.
Glendale 8, Burbank South 1--Glendale’s Rob Walley (1-1) struck out six and threw a two-hitter. Danny Gray had two hits for host Glendale (3-1), which took advantage of eight walks.
Reseda-Cleveland 8, Burbank North 1--Joe Tushnet was three for five with a single, double and triple for visiting Reseda-Cleveland (2-1).
DISTRICT 16
Newbury Park 19, Simi Valley 10--Newbury Park celebrated its first-ever American Legion baseball game by collecting 29 hits off four Simi Valley pitchers in an opener at Newbury Park High.
Tighe Harrell was five for five and earned the victory by allowing three earned runs through six innings for Newbury Park.
Robert Fick drove in four runs and Ocean Campbell and Joey Harris each had three hits for Newbury Park.
Mike Cardenas and Jim Dantona each had two hits for Simi Valley, which competed without several key players.
In other District 16 openers:
Camarillo 12, Ventura 7--Five Camarillo players had two hits and the team jumped to a 12-0 lead after three innings at Moorpark College.
Mike Muncy, Robert Sanchez, Ralph Guillen (three runs batted in), Cory Tucker and John McMullen (two RBIs) each had two hits for Camarillo (1-0).
Dan Haas (1-0) allowed two earned runs on nine hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Westlake-Royal 16, Oxnard 0--Rich Naranjo (four for five, three runs) Dave Landaker (two for four, four runs), Rob Neal (three for five, four RBIs) and Shane Slayton (three for five, three RBIs) led visiting Westlake-Royal (4-0, 1-0) in a game shortened to seven innings.
