Spending Cuts in Education

It’s embarrassing to be a Californian when one reads that other states are finally implementing foreign language instruction in the viable elementary school years, but California’s educational leaders are not (Column One, “Three Rs and an S--for Spanish,” May 15). At least it should be made optional at every elementary school.

The notion that the increased emphasis on English as our state’s and nation’s primary language for everyone would suffer is a non sequitur. I think that Californians should wake up--and work out a way to do both!
