Ballot Issues and Campaign Aid

The Times is very shortsighted in its editorial position opposing Proposition 1 (May 26). Certainly The Times acknowledges the need to upgrade our recreational and cultural facilities and preserve open space land in the city. Proposition 1 would authorize $298.8 million in general obligation bonds for this purpose. By failing to support this opportunity for the people of Los Angeles to vote on this vital question, The Times is virtually saying they have no right to determine the quality of life in their own environs.

It is similar to last November’s County Proposition B, which garnered 62% of the support of the city voters and was endorsed by The Times. Remember, the average cost increase to each homeowner is just $1.10 per month.

Proposition 1 will improve 66 inner-city parks, restore cultural sites at Olvera Street and the Watts Towers, rehabilitate Hollenbeck Park and Elysian Park, improve Venice Pier and Boardwalk, enhance Barnsdall Art Park, implement the master plans for the Los Angeles Zoo and Hansen Dam Recreation Area, and build and/or modernize senior citizen centers in every region of the city.
