Terry Steinbach, catcher for the Oakland Athletics, was in fair condition at Mercy Hospital in Chicago hospital after being struck in the head by a pitch Saturday night, hospital officials said. The extent of Steinbach’s injuries hadn’t been determined, nor had doctors estimated how long Steinbach would be hospitalized, hospital spokeswoman Joan Hession said. Steinbach was hit by Chicago White Sox relief pitcher Bobby Thigpen during the ninth inning of Saturday night’s game. The ball struck the left ear flap of Steinbach’s helmet.
