Julian
Two hikers were found slightly injured Monday morning after tumbling down a waterfall and spending the night lost at the bottom of a canyon in Julian, the Sheriff’s Department reported.
Amanda Milligan, 20, of Alpine had suffered minor injuries Sunday night when she was swept 20 feet down a waterfall and became wedged in a crevice in an area known as the Devil’s Punch Bowl, Sheriff’s Deputy Pearl Janulewicz said. Milligan was extricated by a sheriff’s rescue team about 9:30 a.m. Monday and taken by Life Flight helicopter to Sharp Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Brian Charles, 24, also of Alpine, had fallen with Milligan but did not get stuck, Janulewicz said. He was treated for minor injuries at the scene by rescuers.
Milligan and Charles were reported overdue about 11:30 p.m. Sunday by their fathers, Janulewicz said. Deputy Clyde Rinkes from the Pine Valley substation and John Elliott, a man familiar with the area, searched overnight for the missing hikers.
The two fathers, who also spent the night searching, found their sons about 9:30 a.m. in an area of the canyon accessible only by foot, Janulewicz said. The men were able to signal a Sheriff’s Department helicopter assisting in the search.
