World IN BRIEF : EL SALVADOR : Peace Talks Recess Without Progress

Hopes for a quick end to El Salvador’s civil war have dimmed with the adjournment a day early of the latest round of peace talks, held in Venezuela. Once again, negotiators were deadlocked on how to reform the military. The talks, begun under the auspices of the United Nations in April, 1990, will resume later this month at a location to be announced, the U.N. mediator said. Both sides say they expect a truce in the fighting by year’s end.
