School: Katella High

Sport: Track and field

Event: High jump

Class: Senior

For the second consecutive season, Carlson broke the county high jump record at the State track and field championships, but this time it wasn’t enough to win. Carlson jumped 7-1 to break the 7-0 mark he set last year, but Avery Anderson of Riverside North cleared 7-2 for the title. Carlson missed his first attempt at 7-2 and then had the bar moved to 7-3 1/2--which would have been a State record--and missed twice, hitting the bar with his calf on one attempt. Carlson will continue to compete at the high school level for at least another week, having been invited to the Golden West Invitational Saturday in Sacramento. He has yet to decide where he will attend college. UCLA and San Diego State have expressed interest but no scholarships have been offered. Carlson said he might attend Fullerton College, where Olympic high jumper Doug Nordquist is an assistant coach.

Other top performers:

Tim Martin, a San Clemente sprinter who ran the fastest 100 meters in county history--a wind-aided 10.46--and the second fastest 200--a wind-aided 21.25--finishing third and fourth at the State meet.

Mark Parlin, who won the shotput with a mark of 61-5 1/2 and finished second in the discus (181-7) at the State meet for Esperanza.

Mike Terry, who won the 800 meters in 1:53.99 for El Modena at the State meet.
