SPORTSCOPE : Baldwin Park, Muir Lead All-Star Picks
Baldwin Park High, which reached the CIF Division IV football final last season, and perennial power Muir each had four players selected to compete in the 12th annual National Football Foundation Hall of Fame Prep All-Star Football Game at 8 p.m. July 19 at Citrus College.
The game will match many of the top graduated seniors in the San Gabriel Valley.
Baldwin Park has linebacker Fernando Arredondo, defensive linemen Jerry Sims and cornerback Nelson Vargas on the East team and Muir has wide receiver Demetrice Martin, quarterback Sedrick Thomas, linebacker Jelani Pulliam and lineman Hank Curtis on the West squad.
The East team will also include running back Tyrone Edwards and linebacker Luis Cuevas of Nogales, safety Mike Velasco and offensive lineman John Ludwiczak of Bishop Amat, offensive lineman Steve Chiasson of Wilson, running back Bill Zernickow of Glendora and wide receiver Johnny McWilliams of Pomona.
The West roster also includes running backs Daimon Shelton of Duarte, Alfonso Montoya of San Marino and Jhayson Hall of Pasadena, tight end Sean Dublin and linebacker Matt Gilmour of Temple City and kicker Neil Voskeritchian of Arcadia.
National prep record-holder Juliana Yendork of Walnut High is among the athletes expected to compete in the first National Scholastic Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday and Sunday at Birmingham High in Van Nuys.
Yendork, a senior, established a national prep record in the triple jump with a leap of 44 1/2 feet at the CIF state final last week at Cerritos College. She also won the state title in the long jump last week and leads the nation in that event.
Among other top competitors will be sprinter Marion Jones from Oxnard Rio Mesa, a sophomore who holds the national prep record in the 100 meters.
