Free Trade With Mexico
Regarding James M. Cypher’s column (Commentary, May 22) concerning “fast-track” trade with Mexico:
Cypher emphasized the loss of jobs as exampled by the maquiladora plants on our border. In the interest of fairness, he should also mention that the maquila program has saved American jobs as well as industries.
In our case we manufacture plastic bags. We must compete with imports from Taiwan, China, Korea, Venezuela and other Third World countries. Our alternative, and salvation, has been the maquila plant in Mexico. We are competitive now, and have not only saved existing jobs in Los Angeles but increased the work force here to service the Mexican plant.
