Infant Bone Marrow Donor Discharged From Hospital

The baby girl who donated bone marrow to her ailing older sister is “entirely well and normal” and has been discharged from the hospital, her doctor said Wednesday.

But doctors at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte would not comment on the status of 19-year-old Anissa Ayala, who received marrow extracted from the hipbone of 14-month-old Marissa Eve Ayala.

Dr. Rudolf Brutoco, Marissa’s pediatrician, said the baby was discharged from the hospital shortly after the transplant Tuesday. The transplant came after a desperate search for a donor for Anissa, who suffers from leukemia. Anissa’s parents conceived Marissa after no donor was found with marrow matching their older daughter’s.
