L.A. Residents Cut Water Use by 26.5% in May
Los Angeles residents cut their water use by 26.5% in May, nearly double the amount required under the city’s emergency water conservation law, Department of Water and Power officials reported Wednesday.
As of May 1, residents have been required to cut their water usage 15% from 1986 levels, before the current drought began. When factoring in the effects of population growth and differences in weather, a process DWP officials called “normalization,” the level of conservation rose to 27.5%.
The level of conservation in May held relatively steady with the performance in April. In that month, actual water use was cut by 25.7% and the normalized conservation level was 27.8%, according to the DWP.
