OJAI : Plan for Open-Air Market Reviewed

A proposal for two new produce markets in Ojai got a preliminary review by the city Planning Commission on Wednesday night.

Hank and Cynthia Korman of Ojai want to set up two markets on Canada Street from Ojai Avenue to Matilija Street.

One market would be open-air, open on weekends and would feature locally grown produce sold by the growers. The other would be a permanent, enclosed market, also offering produce.

A Planning Department staff report conceded that such a farmers’ market “would probably be quite successful in Ojai.”

However, Assistant Planner Marilyn Grauel said there are some problems with the idea.

Parking is limited in the area, and there are concerns that it would worsen traffic conditions. However, the commission said the problems could be eased.

Also, the staff document reflects apprehension about “creating a swap-meet atmosphere in the downtown area.”
