Investigation Ends in Arrest of 12, Seizures of Guns, Drugs : Crime: An attempted murder case in San Fernando leads police to what may be a narcotics ring.

What began last week as an investigation of an attempted murder in San Fernando ended early Wednesday in a drug bust that netted a dozen arrests and a stash of narcotics, weapons, cash and cars, authorities said.

San Fernando detectives, working with sheriff’s investigators, seized 31 pounds of cocaine and about two pounds of tar heroin from a Reseda motel room shortly before 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sgt. Michael Harvey said.

Harvey estimated the drugs’ street value at more than $450,000. Also recovered were three loaded handguns, a loaded AK-47 assault rifle, $14,000 in cash and five vehicles.

Police arrested nine men, two women and a 16-year-old girl at or near four locations. All are believed to be Mexican nationals who may be part of a drug-running operation.

Authorities said two of the handguns appear to have been used in a murder attempt last week at a San Fernando video rental store. A 30-year-old Canoga Park man, whose name was withheld, was injured May 30 when two men followed him into the store and shot him, Harvey said.

Among those arrested were Samuel Sanchez Nunez, 36, and Humberto Rodriguez Munoz, 32, both of Reseda. The two were being held without bail on suspicion of attempted murder and drug trafficking, Harvey said.

Ten others were booked on suspicion of drug trafficking. Bail was set at $1 million each for five of the suspects and $10,000 each for the other five, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Gregory J. Palmieri.
