Fans came from near and far to see Fernando Valenzuela pitch for the Angels Friday night, some passing up the Lakers’ televised NBA Finals game against the Chicago Bulls and some making long trips to Anaheim Stadium.

“Normally I’d be at home watching Magic and the Lakers, but look at all the people here,” 60-year-old Huntington Beach resident Ray Cole said of the crowd of 49,977. “We’re season ticket holders and we’re delighted to have him. Just look at his charisma.”

Cole’s wife, Carol, said Nolan Ryan was the only other Angel who could attract as many people to Anaheim Stadium.

“There’s an electricity to him,” Carol said. “He’ll bring fans to Anaheim Stadium who have never been here before.”

Luis Cota, a 28-year-old from San Luis, Mexico, and three friends drove five hours to watch Fernando pitch.

“We’re here to see him win again,” he said. “We want to support him.”
