Base Closure Opens New Possibilities

The possible closing of the Tustin Marine Corps Air Station, with its two gigantic blimp hangars, presents an exciting possibility for Orange County. These historic hangars would be a perfect place for a first-class air museum in an area where so much of the pioneering and development of air flight took place.

There might also be enough room for the experimental aircraft design area that Patrick Mott suggested (“Floating a New Plan for Glorious Old Hangars,” May 10).

We have visited the Air Force Museum in its cramped quarters in Dayton, Ohio, and the fine Boeing Air Museum in Seattle. Each of these presents a view of American flight history from a unique standpoint, but each is limited in its outlook and facilities.

Such an air museum would be an enviable asset to Orange County. Its development would also present an exciting challenge.
