Ivan Stewart of Alpine, Calif., won the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 at Ensenada, Mexico.

Stewart averaged 48.03 m.p.h. in his single-seat Toyota to finish the 428-mile race in 8 hours 54 minutes 38.28 seconds. He was nearly 23 minutes faster than Danny Letner of Orange. Winning the overall motorcycle title was a four-man Kawasaki team that included Larry Roeseler of Bloomington, Calif. After Roeseler’s own factory-backed Kawasaki broke down, he subbed for injured Greg Zitterkopf of Chino, who had broken his right foot in an accident a few miles into the race.

The team of Garth Sweetland, Phoenix, Paul Krause of Irvine, Zitterkopf and Roeseler won in 8:54.38 with an average speed of 49.9 m.p.h.
