A carpet cleaner charged Sunday with killing two young women told investigators he became enraged and strangled them after one sprayed him with Mace she had carried since five murders in the town last year, a prosecutor said.

Alan Robert Davis, 29, was jailed without bail on murder charges after police said he admitted strangling the two University of Florida students.

Davis is charged in the deaths Thursday of Eleanor Anne Grace, 20, of Ft. Myers, and Carla Marine McKishnie, 22, of Brandon. Grace was a sophomore studying psychology and McKishnie was a graduate student in education.

The women’s parents gave them the Mace after the mutilation murders of five students last August, the Gainesville Sun reported in today’s editions.

According to State Atty. Len Register, Davis said he punched Grace once in the face and knocked her unconscious after she sprayed him with the chemical. Her roommate then jumped on Davis.

Davis told investigators he fought with McKishnie and strangled her, then choked Grace to death, Register told The Sun.

Authorities would not say why Grace used the chemical spray on Davis, who was cleaning the carpet at the women’s apartment.
