Future of Actors Conservatory Still in Doubt

The future of Rancho Santiago College’s Professional Actors Conservatory remains in limbo after a meeting of the college trustees.

As part of efforts to trim $2 million from the college budget, the trustees have been considering a proposal to eliminate the five-year-old conservatory, budgeted at about $125,000 a year. According to conservatory director Philip Beck, about 35 current and former students attended a trustee meeting Monday night and many spoke in support of the two-year conservatory program. The trustees took no action at the meeting.

Beck said he thought the students “were very persuasive” and that he is “hopeful” that the conservatory will continue. A spokesman for the trustees could not be reached.
