VENTURA : District Proposes 1.6% Salary Cuts

Ventura Unified School District administrators on Tuesday presented a budget to the school board that included a 1.6% salary cut for all teachers and administrators next school year.

The salary cuts, amounting to an estimated $700,000, were part of $3.2 million in cuts that the district must make to balance its $57-million budget, officials said. The cuts would be necessary if public schools do not get a cost-of-living increase from the state next year, they said.

Other proposed cuts included allowing 12 to 15 teaching positions to remain unfilled, which would save the district $630,000, officials said. Those cuts, however, are now under negotiation with the Ventura Unified Education Assn., budget director Joseph Richards said.

John Gennaro, president of the education association, said the salary cuts might not be needed if Proposition 98 is not suspended. “My feeling is the 1.6% probably won’t materialize when all is said and done,” Gennaro said.
