Charges Dropped in Detroit Drug Probe
DETROIT — Drug trafficking and corruption charges against 11 Detroit area police officers and two others, including the mayor’s niece, have been dropped to allow more time for investigation, federal authorities said Tuesday.
Federal law requires that suspects be indicted by a grand jury within 30 days of their arrests, a deadline U.S. Atty. Stephen Markman said he could not meet. But he said the charges could be reinstated after further investigation.
The 13 suspects, including Mayor Coleman A. Young’s niece, Cathy Volsan-Curry, were arrested in May.
The arrests began with Detroit police Sgt. Jimmie Harris, a suspected ringleader, on charges that he arranged police protection for drug dealers and money launderers.
