The FCC today will consider rules that could subject more than half of the nation’s cable TV systems to local price regulation. Now, 97% of cable systems are exempt from regulation. The Bush Administration has proposed allowing only systems facing competition from at least six over-the-air broadcast stations to avoid regulation. If accepted by the Federal Communications Commission, that plan would give local governments control over the prices charged by about 60% of the nation’s 9,600 cable systems.
