Anyone who gets a kick out of Cole Porter might want to celebrate the legendary songwriter’s 100th birthday with a trip to the Pasadena Playhouse, where a revival of Porter’s musical “You Never Know” is under way.
The original 1938 Broadway production incorporated music of other composers and a flashy chorus line. The Pasadena production will go back to the Porter basics, with more attention to music than pizazz. A six-member cast will croon such hits as “At Long Last Love” and “Let’s Misbehave.”
Porter, who died in 1964, would have celebrated his 100th
birthday on June 9. He was born in Peru, Ind., and began to study piano and violin at the age of 6.
The Pasadena show runs through June 30. Performances are at 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, 5 and 9 p.m. Saturdays and 2 and 7 p.m. Sundays. Tickets cost $33. The Playhouse is at 39 S. El Molino Ave. The box office number is (818) 356-7529.
Meanwhile, Porter fans who find the $33 ticket price a bit steep could opt for a less expensive way to commemorate his birthday: buy one of the newly issued postage stamps bearing his likeness. The cost: 29 cents.
