Starting Monday, about a third of the city’s households can recycle home and yard waste at their own curbsides.

Olympics Plastics Corp. will deliver 2,800 plastic crates this week for the six-month-long pilot project. Each of the three blue stackable containers will be labeled with the name of each recyclable product, such as newspapers, cans, glass, and plastics. Residents, however, must supply their own labeled bin for yard waste.

The city paid the company $28,132 to deliver the crates. The state will reimburse the city for half of that amount. West Covina Disposal will pick up the products free on regular trash pickup days.

The recycling project will be carried out in five neighborhoods:

* Northeast, east of Barranca Street and south of Virginia Avenue.

* Central, around the intersection of Valinda and Vine avenues.

* South, around the intersection of Nogales Street and Amar Road.

* Northwest, south of Puente Avenue and west of Vincent Avenue.

* Extreme southwest, south of Sunset Avenue and west of Francisquito Avenue.

In six months, the council will decide if it wants to expand the project citywide next year.
