A 22-year-old Long Beach man charged with raping two women in the Belmont Heights area pleaded not guilty this week.

Terry Maurice Wilson is being held without bail after police charged him with 16 felony counts, including rape and robbery.

Police are investigating whether Wilson may also be responsible for the remainder in a string of rapes and burglaries in and near the affluent Belmont Heights neighborhood, according to Sgt. C. S. Roberson. There have been six other rapes in the area in the past year and a half.

“He may not be responsible for all of them,” said Roberson, who heads the sex crimes detail. But police do not believe there is another serial rapist in the area. “We haven’t identified another serial (rapist),” Roberson said Wednesday.

Wilson is the second serial rapist in the neighborhoods bordered by Cherry and Ximeno avenues and Anaheim Street and Ocean Boulevard. A juvenile arrested earlier this year in another string of assaults and robberies will be tried as an adult, a judge ruled Tuesday.
