Sheldon Slusman, co-owner of the Baked Potato jazz club in North Hollywood, has died at a Burbank hospital. He was 56.

Slusman, a Burbank resident, died Saturday of cancer, said his cousin, Nathan Katz.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Slusman came to the United States in the early 1960s and worked as a wardrobe consultant in the entertainment industry.

Soon after Don and Norma Randi opened the Baked Potato in 1970, Slusman began working at the club and later became co-owner.

The small, intimate club has been a steppingstone for many musicians and has featured early appearances by Al Jarreau, Larry Carlton and Tom Scott, said musician and club co-owner Don Randi.

Slusman, who handled the club’s business dealings, remained co-owner until his death.

He is survived by his mother, Molly Slusman of Winnipeg.

Burial was in Canada and a memorial service was held Wednesday at the club. Glasband-Willen Mortuary in North Hollywood handled the arrangements.

Contributions may be made in Slusman’s name to a cancer fund of the donor’s choice.
