CAMARILLO : Covers Sought for Adult News Racks

More than 30 residents wearing white ribbons pleaded before the Camarillo City Council on Wednesday to require blinders on news racks containing allegedly pornographic tabloids.

“Our sons and daughters are at stake,” said Bob Jones, a Simi Valley resident working with California Care Coalition, a branch of the Cincinnati-based National Coalition Against Pornography.

Jones cited a study that showed that youths ages 12 to 17 are the most susceptible to pornography addiction.

Clara Davis of Camarillo showed the council a poster taped with photographs of newsstands in Camarillo that display the allegedly pornographic publications. She added that the newsracks were cracked, dirty and riddled with holes, which is in violation of city regulations.

The coalition members demanded that blinders be placed over the bottom two-thirds of the display in keeping with state law dictating that material harmful to minors should be covered.

Council members voted to submit the tabloids to the district attorney’s office for possible prosecution and may take the matter to a grand jury, Councilman Mike Morgan said.
