OXNARD : High School District Bans Gang Symbols
Gang-related clothing and symbols will be prohibited at the six schools in the Oxnard Union High School District, board members decided Wednesday.
The board voted 4 to 0 in favor of the ban, an addition to an existing dress and grooming policy. Trustee Janet Lindgren was absent.
A board report defined a gang as a group of individuals who have a name or identified leadership, claim a turf or territory, associate on a continuous or regular basis and engage in delinquent or criminal activity.
“The board of trustees believes that the health and safety of students is in jeopardy when students wear or carry any clothing or symbol that denotes membership in such a group,” the policy reads.
The list of possible prohibited items includes clothing, jewelry, notebooks or accessories that denote gang affiliation.
Students who are found by teachers and administrators to violate the district’s dress code are sent home to change.
