Actress Marla Gibbs of Inglewood is among those who were honored for outstanding volunteer efforts at the annual recognition dinner of the Volunteer Centers of Los Angeles and South Bay-Harbor-Long Beach recently at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Manhattan Beach. She received the “Hearts at Work” award.

Gibbs is developing a major cultural, entertainment and educational complex in the inner city through Crossroads Arts Academy and Theatre, founded in 1982 for the purpose of nurturing the talents of young and old.

Aside from winning four consecutive Emmy awards for Best Supporting Actress (1981-85) and the NAACP Image Award as Best Actress in a Comedy Series seven times, she has received a special award of merit from the Southern California Motion Picture Council and the Black Women in Theatre-West, Frances E. Jane Au was named Volunteer of the Year by the Department of Arboreta and Botanic Gardens, and received the Arts and Humanities Departmental Award from Los Angeles County during the county’s annual recognition awards ceremonies at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. She is serving her third term as president of the South Coast Botanic Garden Foundation and has served in other capacities with the foundation, the Torrance YWCA, League of Women Voters, Norris Theatre and Peninsula Seniors.

Edie Pfeifer of Hermosa Beach and Keith Brothers of Redondo Beach are among the artists whose sculptures will be shown at the fifth annual Golden State Sculpture Assn. All Sculpture Show, to be held Saturday and Sunday at the Peter Strauss Ranch in Agoura. Pfeifer will be showing eight works, seven fired clay pieces and one bronze piece. Brothers will show eight stone works.

Herman Hartzel of Inglewood will receive an Individual Award of Merit on Saturday from the Conference of California Historical Societies for his contributions of photography to the cause of historic preservation. He will receive the award at a luncheon hosted by the Mono County Historical Society. Hartzel was nominated by the Historical Society of Centinela Valley. The local society gave Hartzel an honorary life membership in 1986, lauding him for his skill in copying and restoring badly faded old prints and tintypes.

Gardena resident Christopher D. Cameron has joined Southwestern University School of Law as an associate professor. Beginning in the fall, he will teach bankruptcy, civil procedure and labor and employment law. Cameron is a partner with the Burbank firm of Taylor, Roth, Bush and Geffner. Before that, he was a staff attorney with the Office of Central Staff, U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, where he had previously served as a law clerk to Judge Harry Pregerson.

Dentist Lewis J. Turchi of Palos Verdes is the new president of the 17,000-member California Dental Assn. Turchi attended Cal State Los Angeles, and USC, before earning his DDS at the University of the Pacific in San Francisco.

Manhattan Beach Police Sgt. Andy Harrod is the recipient of the Lions Club District 4L3 Community Service Award. The award was presented by Gaylan King, president of Manhattan Beach Lions Club. District 4L3 is made up of 53 local Lions clubs.
