Some suggestions for enjoying those Father’s Day activities that local dads seem to favor:

Fishing

Plenty of local concerns offer fishing trips, though if--like Mike Montgomery--you’re angling for marlin, traditionally the season is July through October. The following are open every day:

- Davey’s Locker, 400 Main St., Balboa Pavilion, Balboa Peninsula, Newport Beach, (714) 673-1434. Half-, three-quarter and full-day trips range from $20 to $50. Most trips carry up to 100 passengers, though full-day trips accommodate about half that amount. Destination depends “on where the bite is,” though three-quarter and full-day trips commonly go to Catalina. A half-day, six-passenger skiff cruises Newport Harbor for $35.

- Bongos Sportfishing Charters, 400 Main St., Balboa Pavilion, Newport Beach, (714) 673-2810. Parties never exceed six passengers. All-day boats depart at 6 a.m. and return at 4 p.m. Average price is $100 per person. Night shark-fishing boats depart at 6 p.m. and return at midnight. Trips locally and to Catalina.

- Dana Wharf Sportfishing, 34675 Golden Lantern, Dana Point Harbor, (714) 496-5794. Half- and three-quarter-day trips from $20 to $30 for adults, $15 to $20 for children. Trips typically carry 60 passengers. Overnight trips for $60. Boats may be chartered, for four to 60 passengers, for $350 to $1,200. Private charters only to Catalina.

Snorkeling

Turbulent waves and difficult access make Moss Point--Christian Rassinoux’s Father’s Day pick--one of the county’s less ideal snorkeling spots, according to Larry A. Wells, head diving instructor at Laguna Sea Sports, a Laguna Beach dive shop. He recommends the following protected coves, all roughly within a mile of Laguna Beach, for easy access, calmer waves, shallow, clear water and a pleasing range of underwater sights.

- Crescent Bay: Access--1300 Circle Way.

- Shaws Cove: Access--1000 Cliff Drive at 100 Fairview St.

- Picnic Beach: Access--100 Myrtle St. and 500 Cliff Drive.

A mask, snorkel and fins rent for $8 a day at Laguna Sea Sports, 925 N. Coast Highway, Laguna Beach, (714) 494-6965.

The following are 18-hole public courses open dawn to dusk, seven days a week, that offer lessons and rent electric golf carts.

Farther Afield

- Panama Canal cruise: Two adults and three children can take an 11-day cruise from Acapulco through the canal to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for $17,925, which covers two cabins, all round-trip air fares (from Los Angeles to Mexico and San Juan back to Los Angeles), port taxes and insurance for luggage and cancellation, says Marilyn Pantuso, a Newport Beach travel agent.

Superior Court Commissioner Richard G. Vogl and family may have to hold off, however, as the canal is too hot for June cruises, Pantuso said.

- European vacation: As for Rick Elias’ European dreams, he, his wife and three children can fly to Paris and back for $5,510 and to Berlin for $5,790.
