Left-hander Floyd Bannister, on the disabled list since May 18 because of tendinitis in his left shoulder, was sent to Class-A Palm Springs on rehabilitation assignment.

Bannister’s first scheduled outing will be tonight at High Desert, in a relief role.

The Angels have drafted University of Louisville quarterback Browning Nagle, two months after the New York Jets chose him in the second round of the NFL draft as their quarterback of the future.

Nagle, drafted in the 51st round of the recent amateur draft, is interested in giving baseball a shot but considers the NFL his top priority.

Nagle hasn’t played baseball since his senior year at Pinellas Park High in Largo, Fla., but the Angels decided to take a flyer on him after watching his 451-yard passing performance in the Jan. 1 Fiesta Bowl. The Angels want to try him as a pitcher.

Ted Higuera’s third-inning strikeout of Wally Joyner was the 1,000th of the Milwaukee left-hander’s career. . . . Dave Parker said that Fernando Valenzuela shouldn’t be discouraged by his slow start. “I know you have to go through an apprenticeship when you come over from the National League. I did,” Parker said. “The umpires try to set a tone, ‘This is our league.’ He’s got to be patient. I still feel the man can pitch.”

Catcher Lance Parrish missed his third consecutive game because of a strained tendon in his right forearm. . . . Bryan Harvey, who earned his 15th save Tuesday, is on a pace to break Donnie Moore’s single-season club record of 31, set in 1985. Moore didn’t earn his 15th save until June 21 and his 16th until July 4. . . . Mark Eichhorn, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning, has faced 141 consecutive batters without giving up a walk. . . . Several hundred Marines from El Toro Marine Base--all veterans of Desert Storm--were the Angels’ guests Wednesday.
