We had our feet up on the desk, daydreaming of wide open plains and ribbons of concrete and blacktop, and hitchhiking across America.

In this landscape rode Woody Guthrie and Dean Moriarty and Jack Kerouac, who wrote in “On the Road”:

“The magnificent car made the wind roar; it made the plains unfold like a roll of paper; it cast hot tar from itself with deference--an imperial boat.”

And when the item announcing the celebration of Route 66 caught our eye, we tipped our head back and roared.

Once upon a time in America, before bland super highways began to proliferate, Route 66 meant wayward freedom for many, a crazy Manifold Destiny.

The California Historic Highways Assn. will co-sponsor a celebration to kick off next year’s 66th anniversary of the famed route. The festivities, which begin Friday night at the Santa Monica Pier, will include a classic car show, dancing and a beach run. Admission is free. For information call (213) 458-5956.
