Arco Tops Pollution Penalty List
Five of the South Coast Air Quality Management District’s top 10 air pollution penalty settlements in March involved South Bay industrial plants, according to a listing released this week by the air quality agency.
Topping the list was a settlement in which Arco agreed to pay $300,000 for allowing excessive gas fume pollution at a fuel loading facility in Carson. Another settlement involving Arco, this one of $10,000 for excess hydrogen sulfide pollution at its Carson refinery, ranked ninth on the AQMD list.
Among the other top settlements were $28,800 with Fletcher Oil & Refining Co. for air pollution at its Carson refinery; $14,800 with McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Co. for using an unauthorized cleaning solvent at its Torrance plant, and $10,000 with Ablestick Co., a Gardena adhesives manufacturer, for hydrocarbon pollution.
