The Ventura County Area Agency on Aging has awarded more than $1.1 million to organizations providing food and social services for the elderly.

Agency director Colleen House said the funding was approved by the Board of Supervisors Tuesday and will take effect July 1.

More than two-thirds of the award will pay for home-delivered meals and group meals for the elderly at 15 locations in the county. The remainder will fund senior centers and provide older residents with day care, counseling and legal services.

“We are very pleased that we have the funds available to help an aging population that has grown enormously over the past 10 years,” House said.

The grants were funded by federal and state money under the 1966 Older Americans Act.
