$25 Million Donated to Stanford
STANFORD, Calif. — Texas billionaire Robert Bass and his wife, Anne, gave $25 million to Stanford University on Thursday, calling the gift a vote of confidence in the school that is under fire for how it spent federal research dollars.
“This is a gift given, really, out of respect for the university,” Robert Bass told reporters outside a university board of trustees meeting where the donation was revealed.
The $25-million gift, which was not tied to funding for any specific department or program, is one of the largest donations in the school’s 100-year history, university officials said.
During the past year, Stanford has been under investigation by the federal government for allegedly overbilling for research. Federal auditors have estimated that Stanford might have overcharged the government up to $200 million during the 1980s for indirect costs related to federal research.
