Pitcher Bret Saberhagen of the Kansas City Royals has tendinitis in his right rotator cuff and will miss at least one start.

Saberhagen was to start Monday against the Texas Rangers in Arlington, Tex. He will begin light workouts over the weekend.

The Royals said his condition will be re-evaluated next week.

Saberhagen, 6-3 with a 2.96 earned-run average, had to come out of the game Wednesday night after pitching five innings. He had an 8-1 lead going into the fifth at Baltimore but gave up five hits and six runs before getting out of the inning.

The right-hander said he felt his shoulder stiffen with the first pitch he threw in the fifth and felt his velocity diminish.

“I started out the inning at 91 (m.p.h.) and finished at 83,” said Saberhagen, a two-time Cy Young Award winner.
