Executive Producer of Pauley’s Show Quits

David Browning, executive producer of NBC’s low-rated “Real Life With Jane Pauley,” has quit the show and NBC News after one season, it was announced Tuesday.

NBC spokeswoman Peggy Hubble said Browning left word that it was an amicable departure, and that he was going off to work on other projects. Browning, a respected veteran of more than 20 years at CBS News, had moved out of his office and was not available for comment.

His resignation came less than a month after NBC gave Steve Friedman, executive producer of the “NBC Nightly News,” a second job as the executive in charge of Pauley’s show.

That didn’t sit well with Browning, who “clearly wasn’t happy with the situation,” said an NBC source who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Pauley’s series premiered last fall.

Friedman previously worked with Pauley when both were at the “Today” show. He was brought to “Real Life” to make it more competitive when it and another NBC News series, “Expose,” move from Sundays to Friday nights next fall.

However, he only will oversee Pauley’s series. He did not replace Browning, whose successor as executive producer will be announced later, NBC said.
