TUSTIN : New Recycling Plan Will Hike Trash Fee
A citywide recycling plan adopted by the City Council this week will spare residents from sorting trash, but will increase monthly residential garbage rates by $2.64.
The “materials recovery” program puts the responsibility of sorting into the hands of the hauler. The city’s trash collector, Great Western Reclamation Inc., has agreed to take the trash to a special facility where the sorting will take place. Residents are left with one task--putting out their trash.
“We have determined that it is in the best interest of the city to use the materials recovery plan,” Finance Director Ron Nault told the council. “It is the most economical and efficient . . . to obtain our goal.”
The plan was recommended because of the large number of apartment complexes in Tustin, Nault said. Under state law, cities must reduce the amount of disposable waste 25% by 1995.
The new rates will take effect July 1, but the increase will not show up on trash bills until August, said City Manager William A. Huston.
