Teaching Staff Cuts OKd for Community Colleges

Trustees of the Los Angeles Community College District have adopted a tentative 1991-92 budget that, at $336.5 million, is smaller than this year’s $406.1-million budget and foresees further cuts in part-time faculty and in class offerings.

But Larry Serot, budget director for the nine-college district, said the state funding package in the works in Sacramento could blunt the impact and make some reductions unnecessary.

The tentative budget calls for about $10 million less in the operations budget, including a $3.8-million cut to colleges and to district administration. This would mean a loss of about 80 part-time teachers and between 300 and 400 classes, Serot said. The budget also includes a $4-million cut in instructional equipment purchases and a $7-million reduction in deferred maintenance spending, as well as anticipated reductions in federal aid.
