The Army Corps of Engineers will hold a meeting today to inform the public about progress in the Tierrasanta cleanup.

Earlier this spring, during part of a 2 1/2-year cleanup contract, officials found two 70-millimeter shells in the Tierrasanta park area. Rather than remove the shells, searchers blew them up on site, said Bob Armogeda, Corps of Engineers spokesman. The first one was found and exploded April 24; the second one May 1.

During the meeting, officials will offer an update on their progress and describe the status of birds, plants, and animals in the area, a former gunnery range. The meeting will be held at 11 a.m. at the Tierrasanta Community Center, 11220 Clairemont Mesa Blvd.
